‘True Promise’: Why Iran Launched Historic Attack on Israel

Tehran: In an unprecedented move, Iran has executed the largest drone strike and missile attack in its history, directly targeting Israel in retaliation for an Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. The operation, dubbed “True Promise” by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), marks a significant turning point in the longstanding enmity between the two nations.

The genesis of this escalation can be traced back to Israel’s targeted strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1, resulting in the loss of seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including two high-ranking generals. In response, Iran launched a relentless barrage of over 300 drones and missiles directly targeting Israel, a departure from decades of proxy conflicts and covert operations.

The codenamed operation, “True Promise,” underscores Iran’s unwavering commitment to retaliatory actions against perceived aggression. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s endorsement of the operation signals a resolute stance in the face of external provocations. By directly targeting Israel, Iran aims to strengthen its deterrence capabilities and assert its resolve in the face of escalating tensions with the United States and its allies.

Iran has issued a warning against Israeli aggression and cautioned the US against supporting any military action. They threatened a severe attack in response to any retaliatory action.

While Israel claims to have intercepted the majority of the projectiles, Israel finds itself in a precarious position, with no consensus on an appropriate retaliation strategy. The reluctance of Western allies, including the United States, to endorse further military action complicates Israel’s response.

The United States and its allies have urged restraint, but the situation remains volatile amid fears of further retaliation.

French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron have both urged Israel to refrain from retaliating against Iran’s recent attack. Macron labeled Iran’s strike on Israel as “disproportionate,” emphasizing the need to avoid further escalation. He pledged France’s support for Israel’s protection and planned to discuss the matter with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Similarly, Cameron stressed the importance of maintaining focus on achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, urging Israel not to escalate tensions

The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations asserts that Iran’s drone and missile strike on Israel was carried out within the scope of Iran’s inherent right to self-defense following Israel’s attack on Iran’s consulate in Damascus.
