Pakistan Proposes Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi as Venues for 2025 Champions Trophy

Lahore: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has proposed Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi as the host cities for the 2025 Champions Trophy, marking the prestigious tournament’s return to Pakistan after nearly three decades.

The PCB confirmed the proposal in its initial draft schedule sent to the International Cricket Council (ICC), targeting a mid-February window for the event. Pakistan, the defending champions from the 2017 tournament, eagerly anticipates hosting the eight-team Champions Trophy tournament over a two-week period. Although exact dates remain under wraps, the selection of venues followed an ICC team’s recent reconnaissance missions to evaluate the facilities and security arrangements.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, in a recent press briefing, expressed optimism about the upcoming event. “We’ve sent the schedule for the matches in Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy,” he stated. Naqvi underscored ongoing communication with the ICC, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to upgrading stadium facilities to ensure a successful tournament.

The discussion surrounding the schedule now pivots towards India’s participation, given the sensitive political relations between India and Pakistan. The fate of India’s games will largely depend on diplomatic dynamics and the Indian government’s approval for its cricket team’s participation in Pakistan.

This development comes amidst a busy cricketing calendar for Pakistan, which includes hosting a tri-series with South Africa and New Zealand just before the Champions Trophy. The PCB also faces logistical challenges with the scheduling of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and potential stadium upgrades.

The proposed upgrades are critical, as noted by Naqvi, who pointed out the need for improved facilities to enhance the spectator experience. “Karachi is in bad shape,” he remarked, highlighting plans to finalize bids with international firms for stadium renovations.

The 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan is poised to be a significant milestone, not only for Pakistan’s cricket but also for its international sports diplomacy, contingent on smooth execution and cooperative international relations.
