Australian Supermarket Chain Trials GPS Trackers on Meat Containers to Deter Theft

Canberra: Have you ever heard of GPS being installed on food items in a store? In a proactive measure against theft, a South Australian supermarket chain has initiated a trial of GPS trackers on packages of high-value meat cuts at two of its stores.

According to international news agencies, after an increase in complaints of branded and high-value meat being stolen, a prominent supermarket chain in Australia, Drakes, has started the project of installing GPS systems on packets. This is to enable monitoring of meat and make it easier to reach thieves.

Drakes installed GPS locators in meat packets placed for sale in their stores. The Supermarket chain introduced the polycarbonate containers equipped with GPS technology three weeks ago on a trial basis, aiming to curb theft instances.

According to Director John-Paul Drake, the innovative containers are being tested at the North Haven and Eyre stores, primarily for expensive meat products like Wagyu steaks. The containers serve as a security measure by alerting staff if they are removed from the store premises without proper payment.

Mr. Drake emphasized the effectiveness of this initiative in addressing the significant issue of theft, amounting to $12 million annually across Drakes stores. With meat prices ranging from $50 to $100 per kilogram, the adoption of GPS-equipped containers not only enhances security but also acts as a deterrent against potential theft incidents.

Due to the higher value of meat packets, it is claimed that losses incurred in cases of theft will be reduced.

Recent statistics from SA Police reveal a concerning 30 percent increase in theft from shops over the past 12 months, with over 1,720 reported incidents in January alone and more than 18,400 incidents recorded over the past year.
