Moscow: After the addition of five more countries, the expanding economic group BRICS now comprises 10 members, with Pakistan and several other nations actively striving for inclusion.
According to international news agencies, Russian President Vladimir Putin, while announcing the inclusion of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates in BRICS, stated that 30 countries are now expressing interest in joining BRICS. The membership of the 5 new countries in BRICS took effect on January 1.
It is noteworthy that these countries were invited to join the group after the BRICS fifteenth summit in Johannesburg (South Africa) in August 2023.
It remains clear that as of January 1, 2024, Russia has assumed the chairmanship of BRICS. Regarding this, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that the group will now include areas of science, technology, health, environment, culture, sports, and youth-related fields in its priority preferences. He stated that under Russian leadership, the group will strengthen relations in terms of development and security.
It should be noted that BRICS, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is a platform for cooperation between emerging economies and developing countries. It represents approximately 42% of the world’s population, 30% of the area, and a total of 23% of global GDP. During the past year, several countries have applied for membership in the group.
It is worth mentioning that Pakistan is also making efforts to join BRICS. However, no decision has been made yet regarding expanding the organization’s membership.
