LONDON: Latest research revealed that short burst of ultrasounds, very high frequency sound, with duration of 30 seconds only can boost mood and vanish depression as volunteers reported substantial improvements in 10 minutes after being treated.
Researchers treated the volunteers with burst of sonic waves which resulted significant improvement in them within 10 minutes only.
Sound treatment is thought to work by stimulating cells (neurons), in particular areas of the brain involved in controlling mood, such as the limbic system which is located on the top of the brain and controls emotions.
The researchers of the experimental therapy are hoping to approve it as effective alternative to anti- depressant drugs as it is a drug-free treatment gaining popularity due to transcranial magnetic stimulation, where magnetic waves are beamed into the head.
Anti-depression medicines majorly work on severe depression patients by adjusting levels of a mood-altering chemical called serotonin. But less effective on the people having mild depression by triggering side-effects including sickness, fatigue to obesity and sexual dysfunction.
Scientists at the University of Arizona collected the result of the research which the results were in the journal Brain Stimulation.
