Islamabad: Reports emerged on Friday of explosions in Iran’s central province of Isfahan, coinciding with assertions from US media sources quoting officials who suggested that Israel had conducted strikes against Iran.
According to Iranian state media, air defense systems were activated over several cities following reports of explosions near the city of Isfahan. Iran’s Fars news agency noted “three explosions” near Qahjavarestan, close to Isfahan airport and the Shekari Army airbase. However, Iranian state media announced that their air defense systems intercepted and destroyed three unidentified aerial objects over Isfahan, a central city in Iran.
The explosions prompted brief flight suspension across parts of Iran. Commercial flights altered their routes to avoid affected areas. Following the incident, Iran lifted flight restrictions in its airspace, allowing for the resumption of flights at major airports.
Despite the incidents, Iranian nuclear facilities in Isfahan were reportedly unaffected, maintaining security.
While there was no immediate comment from the White House or Pentagon, US media, citing anonymous officials, suggested that Israel was responsible for the attack.
These events follow Iran’s first retaliatory direct attack targeting Israel over the weekend after an Israeli airstrike on Iran’s consulate in Damascus that killed seven Iranian officers, three of them generals. Israel, along with allies intercepted most of the missiles and drones launched by Iran in the retaliatory strike.
Oil prices surged over three percent in early Asian trade in response to the reports, underscoring concerns about stability in the Middle East.
