World Happiness Report: Pakistan Happier Than Neighboring Countries

Islamabad: Pakistanis are relatively happier compared to people from neighboring countries including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan, according to the World Happiness Report.

The World Happiness Report 2024, released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network of the United Nations in collaboration with Gallup, Oxford University’s Wellbeing Research Center, and the Editorial Board of the World Happiness Report, reveals that Finland is the happiest country in the world.

The country has secured the top position for the seventh time. Finland offers the highest standard of living, quality education, and the best healthcare facilities and it is also one of the least corrupt countries.

The report includes more than 140 countries. The Nordic countries dominate the top four positions. Denmark ranks second, followed by Iceland in third place and Sweden in fourth. Among the 25 countries, the United States (23), Germany (24), and Mexico (25) rank the lowest.

In the list of 143 countries, Pakistan ranks 108th, while India ranks 126th, Bangladesh 129th, and Afghanistan at the bottom. Pakistan scored 4.6 out of 10 because the country has initiated improvements in various factors such as social support, freedom to make life choices, and generosity. The report emphasizes the need for policymakers to focus on improving the standard of living.

Among the lower-ranking countries compared to Pakistan are Nigeria (109), Burkina Faso (110), Mauritania (111), and then Gambia, Chad, Kenya, and Tunisia at 115. Zimbabwe, Congo, Sierra Leone, Lesotho, and Lebanon are ranked 138, 139, 140, 141, and 142 respectively before Afghanistan.

In the Middle Eastern countries, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia rank 22nd and 28th respectively. In Asian countries, Singapore is 30th, Japan 50th, and South Korea 51st. In the index of the top 100 countries, Iran is 100th, Laos 94th, Nepal 93rd, and Iraq 92nd.

Among the top 60 countries in the list are Cyprus (50), the Philippines (53), Vietnam (54), Portugal (55), Hungary (56), Paraguay (57), Thailand (58), Malaysia (59), and China (60). The significant changes in this report are in GDP per capita, social support, life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and corruption. The survey was filled out on a scale of 0 to 10 by 1000 respondents, known as the Cantril Ladder. Pakistan improved its ranking from 121st last year to its current position.
