Research: Lack of Sleep Leads to Decreased Positive Emotions

Narowal: Researchers have concluded from a study that individuals with insufficient sleep experience a reduction in positive emotions.

According to news agencies, the University of East Anglia conducted research analyzing over 150 studies spanning more than 50 years. The study involved examining over 5,000 individuals aged between 17 to 79 years to understand the effects of sleep deprivation.

The research found a clear correlation between sleep deficiency (a condition where individuals cannot get adequate sleep) and a noticeable decrease in positive emotions among people. Additionally, the study revealed a link between sleep deprivation and increased risks of restlessness and depression, although this effect seemed relatively moderate.

According to Joe Bower, the lead researcher of the study, when people do not engage in enjoyable activities such as meeting friends or watching favorite TV shows, the risks of developing depression increase. He stated that individuals who cannot blend well with others are more prone to the dangers of succumbing to depression when left alone.

Dr. Joe Bower further explained that while our society often stays awake late into the night, this analysis indicates that insufficient sleep can impact their mood. This research was published in the Journal of Psychological Bulletin.
