No armed group to be allowed to dictate its agenda: Pervaiz Rashid

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Pervaiz Rashid has said no armed group would be allowed to dictate its agenda and disturb peace of the country.

He was addressing a candle light vigil ceremony in memory of innocent victims of terrorist attack in Peshawar at National Broadcasting House in Islamabad.

The Minister said that it was because of the immense sacrifices rendered by our children in Peshawar and people of Pakistan in a number of terrorist incidents that united the nation against the menace of terrorism.

He said consensus that emerged during meeting of the parliamentary leaders yesterday would serve as a journey from darkness to the light. He emphatically stated that this journey would be pursued with full commitment and vigor.

He said the nation also resolved yesterday that it would not allow formation of armed and militants groups to dictate the nation about its way of life and relations with neighbours.

The Information Minister said it is prerogative of the people of Pakistan and the elected Parliament as to what system should be enforced in the country.

He said only those institutions authorized by the Constitution have the right and responsibility to possess the gun and use it to defend the country and its people.  No other group or militant organisation can be given this right.

Parvaiz Rashid said by remembering tragedies like Peshawar, we can learn from the mistakes of the past and reflect how to prevent them in future. It is time for us for self-accountability as to where and why we erred.

The Minister said he finds no words to describe the horror that terrorists inflicted on the nation. They spared neither bazars nor mosques, defence installations and hospitals. He said with unity and collective wisdom we can prevent recurrence of such tragedies.

On this occasion, prominent poets paid poetic tributes to martyrs of Peshawar school and highlighted the pain and anguish of the bereaved families.

The Minister, accompanied by Director-General Radio Pakistan Samina Parvaiz, also lit candles in memory of the victims of the Peshawar tragedy.
