DHAKA: A top court in Bangladesh has ordered death sentence to another Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leader Abdul Quader Molla on war crimes.
According to the reports from Bangladesh’s capital city, Dhaka country’s top court Tuesday sentenced to death a senior Islamist opposition official for murder during the 1971 liberation war against Pakistan.
Abdul Quader Molla, 65, the fourth-highest leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, is the first politician to be found guilty by the country’s Supreme Court after it rejected an appeal to acquit him of all charges.
The court, led by chief justice Muzammel Hossain, strengthened the original sentence handed down by the country’s controversial war crimes tribunal (ICT) of life in prison, and imposed the death penalty.
On July 23, after hearing both the parties on their appeals filed against and for the life sentence, the top court said it would announce the judgment any day.
It took over five and a half months since Molla was sentenced to life term in prison by ICT for the court to complete hearing the appeals.
The five-strong Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, has kept the verdict pending.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Deputy Attorney General MK Rahman stood for the state and Abdur Razzaq for the defence at the appeal hearing.
The long-awaited trial of the suspected war criminals started through the constitution of the International War Crimes Tribunal-1 in 2010.
Another JI leaders Delwar Hossain Sayedee and Mohammad Kamaruzzaman were also awarded death sentence by the ICT in Bangladesh.
