Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan has decided to take action against a dozen parliamentarians and members of Sindh and Punjab assemblies, including Interior Minister Rehman Malik in the light of Supreme Court orders in dual nationality case.
Addressing a press conference following a meeting of Election Commission, EC Secretary Ishtiaq Ahmed said that complaints would be sent to concerning session judges for action against the lawmakers who submitted fake documents to the ECP in 2008.
He said that all the lawmakers had been disqualified and session judges could sent them behind the bars for three years with a fine.
The Secretary added that the interior minister had not been de-notified so far and he was still a Senator and the minister for interior affairs.
Answering a question, he said that Mr Malik would be disqualified only after a reference by the Senate Chairman was sent to the Election Commission.
To another query he noted that the Senate Chairman was bound to send reference within the time frame of 30 days. The ECP would initiate an action against Mr Malik on its own if the reference is not send given the time, he noted.
He further said that any person, holding dual nationality would not be able to contest election.
