Kabul: At least two US Marines were killed and several others injured when Afghan militants armed with rocket propelled grenades attacked a Nato base in Helmand, a province of war-torn country Afghanistan.
According to British media, United Kingdom (UK) Prince Harry was also present at the base during the attack but he escaped from the attack.
International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) spokesman Maj. Martyn Crighton, said that the attack on Camp Bastion/ Camp Leatherneck may still be ongoing.
“There are at least two fatalities and a number of wounded. The base took indirect and small arms fire, causing major damage to buildings, an aircraft hangar and several military jets.”
The base is a major military facility in the war-ravaged nation’s Helmand province.
This facility is often subject to indirect fire, but officials in Afghanistan say the damage that has resulted is far more severe than normal.
Earlier the Afghan Taliban threatened to abduct or assassinate Britain’s Prince Harry, who arrived in Afghanistan to fly apache helicopters.
“We have informed our commanders in Helmand to do whatever they can to eliminate him,” Taliban spokesman Mujahid said.
