Naypyidaw (Myanmar): President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday called on veteran democracy advocate and Nobel Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi during his 2-day visit to Myanmar.
The president awarded her ‘Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Award’ during a special occasion here and said that she was a great leader and Pakistan respect her struggle for the democracy.
Speaking on the occasion, Suu Kyi said families of the political prisoners had suffered most in the struggle of democracy in the world. She said securing the lives of the families of political activists was most important.
Suu Kyi is playing an increasingly important role in Myanmar since her release from house arrest just days after elections in 2010 following half a century of military domination.
On Tuesday, President Zardari met with his Myanmar counterpart Thein Sein and called for stronger trade ties between the two countries.
