Sindh Government Decides to Ban Plastic Bags in Karachi

Karachi: Following Punjab, the Sindh government has also decided to impose a ban on plastic bags, prohibiting the use and sale of all types of plastic bags throughout Karachi.

According to media reports, the Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, stated that the decision to ban plastic bags was made to address the clogging issues of sewage lines and storm drains. He highlighted that cleaning these drains costs millions of rupees annually due to plastic bags.

He mentioned that the primary reason for blocked drains during the rainy season is plastic bags. Consequently, there will be formal legislation at the provincial level to ban the use of plastic bags made from specific microns.

Wahab also mentioned that ahead of the rainy season, the city’s drainage systems are often found choked with plastic, leading to potential flood scenarios even during moderate rainfall. To combat these issues effectively, KMC, along with other civic bodies, will develop a joint strategy for the ban’s timely implementation.

Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that the provincial government will enact necessary legislation to enforce this prohibition, following the model already implemented in Islamabad.

It is worth noting that plastic bags are harmful primarily because they are not biodegradable and can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, leading to significant pollution. They often end up in water bodies where they pose a threat to marine life through ingestion and entanglement.

Additionally, the production of plastic bags consumes non-renewable resources and releases harmful emissions, contributing to environmental degradation and climate change.
