Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan was told on Thursday that the government had given approval to 19 rental power projects while only five projects were working.
An SC bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain was hearing the Rental Power case. Abdul Hafeez Pirzada, counsel for Reshma Rental power plant told the court that there was no likelihood of 50 per cent of the projects would be working.
He said that the projects were initiated without any plan. The veteran lawyer also drew court’s attention towards precarious law and order prevailing in the country.
Pirzada said that the court should give ruling in the case in the interest of the country. “We always give verdicts in the national interest” , the CJ responded.
Justice Chaudhry said that if the democratic government, having people’s mandate would not resolve the issues then who do so. He said that the lawyers came on the streets on Novemmber, 3 2007 for the rule of law.
The CJ said that the country has foreign debts of over 67 billion dollars.
