Peshawar: The teachers of the public sector universities including University of Peshawar (UOP) and schools and colleges affiliated with them stages protests rallies and observe boycott of classes against delay in salary raise of teachers here on Friday.
The protest call was given by the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) to press the government for implementation of the 15 percent raise in their salaries announced three months ago for the government employees. A large numbers of students also participated in the protest of teachers to show solidarity with their educators.
The main protest rally was held in Peshawar University under the auspicious of Dr. Johar Ali, president of the Peshawar University Teachers Association and provincial president of the FAPUASA. The participants were chanting slogans against the government and demanding increase in their salaries soon. Addressing to the demonstrators Johar Ali said that the government has failed to fulfill its commitment to raise the salaries of teachers as it had announced three months ago for government employees.
“We are not proud that instead of taking classes we are on roads for our rights. But if we remain silent we will not acquire our rights,” Dr Ali said.
The teachers` leader said that they remained silent for three months and noted that the government would not respond to their mere requests for increase in their salaries which forcing them to come on the roads.
He also said that universities would increase the fee of students to cope with losses if the government kept ignoring the educational institutions and teachers.
Earlier the different student groups in University of Peshawar on Thursday night stage protest demonstration against increase in hostel fees and boycott by the teaching staff. Several hundred students including activists of Azad Pakhtoon Students Federation, Pakhtoon Students Federation, Islami Jamiat Talba and Insaf Students Federation gathered in front of Hostel 2 in the premises and chanted slogans in favor of their demands. Speakers, on the occasion, said that raise in hostel fees was injustice with the students of war-hit areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and demanded that the administration should take withdraw its decision in better interest of the students. The Mutahida Talba Mahaz, representing all unions, started rally to close University Road for traffic but university administration succeeded in stopping them and started negotiations about the demands. However the talks failed and the students have given another call to come together and protest for their demands.
