Kabul: Afghan President Hamid Karzai said on Saturday that the US and other foreign powers were busy in preliminary talks with the Taliban about a possible settlement to decade long war in Afghanistan, news agencies reported.
In the first official confirmation of the US involvement in talks Karzai says“Peace talks are going on with the Taliban.
He said during a news conference in Kabul that the foreign military and especially the US itself was going ahead with these negotiations.
Karzai’s comments came the day after the UN Security Council split the UN sanctions list for Taliban and al Qaeda figures into two lists.
There currently are about 100,000 US troops fighting in Afghanistan, up from about 34,000 when President Barack Obama took office in 2009.
The Taliban have been denying involvement in talks with the US.
