New Delhi: Senior Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Geelani was detained and later released at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport here on Tuesday.
Sources said that Geelani was was on his way to Kashmir, a disputed territory, when he was detained by the Delhi police at the IGI Airport in the morning.
However, the sources said that the senior leader was released about 4 hours later after police had questioned him about his alleged involvement in a case. “Geelani and his son Dr Nayeem Geelani were detained and not allowed to board a Srinagar-bound flight which was to depart at 11.45 am,’’ said Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar.
The police had barred Geelani from leaving Delhi before recording his statement regarding the arrest of his aide Ghulam Mohammad Bhat.
According to the party, the leader was whisked to the Lodhi Garden police station and was questioned for four hours. “He was later released after four hours of questioning. Geelani will be back in Kashmir on Thursday as his tickets for today were cancelled,’’ Akbar added.
“Geelani Sahib had told the police that he would not come to a police station and that they were welcome to record the statement at his Malaviya Nagar residence and had also given time for this morning but the police did not turn up and later arrested him on his way to airport,’’ Akbar said.
Geelani said he was denied the permission to go to Kashmir because the government feared an Egypt like situation in Kashmir.
