Auburn, Wash: The discovery of remains a month ago of a woman believed to be a victim of the Green River Killer has reopened the book on the nation’s longest killing spree. For 28 years, Shawnte Fashaw wondered what happened to her mother. On December 3, 1982, Marrero left then 3-year-old Fashaw with her mother, saying she would only be gone for a short time. She never returned.
A skull found by children playing in a ravine near Seattle has been identified as a woman, who disappeared in 1982 and may be an early victim of the Green River Killer; Authorities have long believed that Rebecca (Becky) Marrero may have been another victim of serial killer Gary Ridgway.
Gary Leon Ridgway (born February 18, 1949), known as the Green River Killer, is an American serial killer. Ridgway murdered numerous women in Washington during the 1980s and 1990s, earning his nickname when the first five victims were found in the Green River. Ridgway was apprehended back in 2001.
“At times when my children are born she can’t be there. At birthday at holidays, she can’t be there it’s hard,” said Fashaw, daughter of Marrero.
The King County Prosecutor’s Office is currently investigating the case and it will likely be weeks, if not months, before a decision is made. It is unlikely that he’ll ever see the light of day, regardless of whether he’s charged in Marrero’s death. Ridgway pleaded guilty to the murder of 48 women, but Marrero was not one of those victims.
“Personally, if anyone deserves the death penalty, it’s the monster Gary Ridgway,” Reichert says, a man who is probably the most visible figure involved with the story of the Green River Killer. He led the Green River Killer Task Force in the 1980s and was serving as King County Sheriff when Ridgway was finally apprehended in 2001. Ridgway is also a suspect in the murders of several prostitutes in Oregon.
