Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday ordered the government to provide security to Hussain Haqqani — the main accused in memogate scandal and former ambassador to the United States — on his return in the country on the court’s order.
An eight-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry resumed the hearing of the memogate case.
On previous hearing of the case, the bench had directed the secretary of interior to appear before the bench on January 12 to brief it over the arrangements pertaining to Haqqani’s security.
During today’s hearing, the apex court expressed anger over the absence of the secretary of interior and ordered him to appear before the bench at 11:30am.
Asma Jahangir, the counsel of Haqqani, told the bench that she had received a letter from the secretary in which the ministry had sought a date of Haqqani return.
However, the court in its short order in the absence of the secretary directed the government to provide foolproof security to Haqqani on return to the country.
Subsequently, the court adjourned the hearing of the case till March 11.
