Jakarta: A volcanic eruption occurred in Indonesia after 22 years, prompting authorities to instruct over 11,000 people near the Mount Ruang volcano to evacuate as there is a risk of a tsunami due to the lava flowing into the sea.
According to media reports, on Tuesday night at 9:45 PM, the explosion occurred at Mount Ruang located in the North Sulawesi province. The next day, four volcanic eruptions occurred, following which the concerned authorities issued alerts to residents in nearby populated areas. Initially, more than 800 people were evacuated from Ruang and transferred to the Tagulandang Island, located 100 kilometers north of Manado.
Officials announced on Thursday morning that due to the extensive zone affected, more people need to be evacuated and taken to Manado.
The head of the Disaster Data, Communication, and Information Center of the Disaster Agency, Abdul Muhari, stated that at least 11,615 residents in the vulnerable areas need to be moved to safe locations. Authorities are also concerned that a part of the volcanic eruption may fall into the sea, resulting in a tsunami, as it happened in 1871.
Earlier, the head of Indonesia’s Geological Agency, Muhammad Wafid, had mentioned that after the initial eruption of Ruang, a column of ash rose two kilometers into the sky, while the second explosion spread up to 1.5 kilometers.
