Desecration of Quran is an attack on the faith of Muslims, says Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

New York: Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari strongly condemned the incident of the Quran burning in Sweden, expressing his displeasure in strong words during a session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. He stated that the desecration of the Holy Quran is equivalent to attacking religious harmony and the faith of Muslims.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, addressing the discussion on actions based on religious intolerance in the Human Rights Council, expressed gratitude for the immediate convening of this discussion and said that three months ago, we observed the first International Day to Combat Islamophobia, and as the head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, we had the privilege of its joint leadership, where we collectively raised our voice against Islamophobia. He voiced these sentiments while addressing the online session of the UN Human Rights Council amidst the heated debate following the recent incident of the Quran burning in Sweden.

He mentioned that on June 28, the Holy Quran was set on fire outside the central mosque in Sweden, which has sparked protests from the entire Muslim world, and governments of all countries have demanded practical steps from the Swedish government in this regard.

On this occasion, Bilawal expressed his sorrow over the incident of Quran desecration in Sweden, stating that such actions, which involve the desecration of sacred scriptures, are carried out to inflame passions and we must clearly understand what this represents.

He stated that all of this is an attempt to incite religious hatred, promote discrimination, and violence, and we all need to come together to condemn it and isolate those elements that promote hatred.

Foreign Minister emphasized that by condemning this act, he is in no way rejecting the fundamental right of freedom of expression; freedom of expression is as necessary as these dangerously hateful speeches.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that there is no Muslim country on this planet that allows the desecration of sacred scriptures and books of other religions. Such acts are inconceivable for any Muslim and are also prohibited in their culture, beliefs, and laws.  He added, that therefore, he stands with those who are calling for restraint against incitement, enmity, legal actions, and accountability towards those who are against the people of faith.

He stated that we all need to unite against hatred, discrimination, and intolerance and pave the way for mutual respect, understanding, and dignity.
