Rape cases inrease by over 100 percent in New Delhi

NEW DELHI: Rape cases in the Indian capital more than doubled between 2012 and 2013 while cases of assault on women increased five times, the government said on Wednesday.  

Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju told the Rajya Sabha that crimes against women increased both in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).

Citing information provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Rijiju said rape cases in Delhi rose from 706 in 2012 to 1,636 in 2013, Midday reported.

“Cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty have spiked five times, from 727 to 3,515 and total registered crimes against women more than doubled from 5,920 to 12,853 cases during the same period,” he said.

“In Delhi and NCR, the total registered crimes against women rose from 11,419 in 2011 to 12,288 (in 2012) and the figure last year (2013) was 21,887,” he said.
