New CJP Justice Nasirul Mulk to take oath on July 6

ISLAMABAD: After the retirement of Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani today the 22nd Chief Justice of Pakistan Nasirul Mulk would take oath of office on July 6 tomorrow.


President of Pakistan Syed Mamnoon Hussain would take oath during a ceremony in which the judges of apex court, Attorney General and other political and social personalities would participate.

President Mamnoon Hussain had approved the appointment of Justice Nasirul Mulk, who is the most senior judge after the Chief Justice.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani has been retired on July 5 after serving about 7 months as CJP while Justice Nasirul Mulk will serve till August 6, 2015.

Nasirul Mulk, a senior most judge of the Supreme Court, belongs to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) was born on August 17, 1950 in Swat, and completed his degree of Bar-at-Law from Inner Temple London and was called to the Bar in 1977. He currently serves as a Justice in the Supreme Court of Pakistan and was a part of a judges’ panel that conducted the proceedings of contempt of court charges against the then Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Justice Mulk was included in those judges who were detained during emergency imposed by the ex president general Pervaiz Musharraf on November 03. However after elections in 2008 he along with Justice Tassaduq Jillani took oath from Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar in Pakistan Peoples Party tenure.

Justice Mulk was sworn in as the new acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan last year in November, when outgoing CJP Jillani took oath as the country’s top judge.

After Justice Nasirul Mulk, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Saqib Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Umar Ata Bandial would become the chief justices of Pakistan as per seniority rules and official record of the Supreme Court.

After the retirement of Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, the number of judges in apex court would become 15 and Justice Jawwad would become senior most judge of SC.
