NEW DELHI: An Indian private university in Greater Noida city of Uttar Pradesh has expelled six students, including four belonging to Kashmir, from the hostel allegedly over clashing and supporting Pakistani team’s victory against India in Asia Cup.
The students residing in Sharda University hostel had been expelled following a tensed week after protest by another group at the varsity who expressed outrage over the students cheering for Pakistani cricket team’s winning against India.
All ousted students were enrolled in first-year while four belonging from Indian territory of Kashmir while two others from Aligarh, Times of India reported.
Ranvir Singh, students’ welfare dean, said “The university expelled them from the hostel to maintain discipline. All of them are first-year students”. Another official said that “Students may be considered for reallocation of hostels after 15 days,”.
According to the reports, the step was taken midweek after a student’s provocative comments on a social media network who demanded revising the Swami Vivekanand Subharti University in Meerut which expelled 67 students celebrating over Pakistan’s win.
However, strong reactions and students started mobilising on campus after the social media post and the varsity’s authorities called police.
