Karachi: The Supreme Court of Pakistan will continue hearing of Karachi law-and-order suo motu implementation case today (Wednesday) at Karachi Registry where key government officials are suppose to inform the court about investigations into various cases.
A five-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, comprising Justices Jawwad S. Khawaja, Khilji Arif Hussain, Amir Hani Muslim and Azmat Saeed will hear the case.
This might be the last hearing of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry in the metropolis because his retirement is due next month.
The Supreme Court had, in its earlier order, asked all the law enforcement agencies to work on one-point agenda of supremacy of law and establishment of government’s writ in the port city.
The court had ordered a probe into several issues including Illegal arms, alleged theft of Nato arms containers and business of legal arms.
During the course of marathon hearing into the matter, it was repeatedly noted the aforesaid issues deteriorated the already miserable situation in the city.
Around 200 different petitions, miscellaneous applications and reports are fixed and expected to be taken up by the bench during the hearing expected to continue till Friday, according to the roster.
At the onset of the hearing, Karachi police chief Shahid Hayat submitted a report about police crackdown in the city. According to the report, the city police have arrested some 8942 criminals since 5 September 2013, registering 1,386 cases.
The police chief submitted that 2293 illegal arms and 220 kg explosives were recovered during raids.
Chief Secretary Sindh turned up before the bench and submited a report. Officials said the provincial government has suggested the Chief Justice to constitute five special courts in Sindh.
Officials of the Rangers, the Anti-Narcotic Force (ANF), the Pakistan Coast Guard (PCG), the Customs and other institutions submitted their reports pertaining to their performance in the light of Supreme Court orders.
