KARACHI: At least six policemen were injured when assailants threw bombs at Karachi’s central Jail on Saturday night.
Police official in the metropolis confirmed the incident and said that the attackers also fired bullets on jail from nearby bridge.
“I hurt huge blast and firing couple of minutes ago while I was in my house,” resident of the area where central jail located told The News Tribe.
Deputy Inspector General Prison told the media that jail gate was the target in the incident.
According to the prison officials, 65 prisoners affiliated to banned out-fits including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) are detained in the prison which could be the reason of the attack. “We are in the process of shifting those prisoners into interior Sindh’s prisons,” the officials said.
“Pakistani Taliban had threatened to attack the Karachi’s central prison in protest against torturing their members by the jail authorities,” The News Tribe’s correspondent from Karachi added.
According to a report conveyed to the Sindh government then, the militants were preparing to attack the central jail and free their almost 35 aides present inside the jail.
Karachi police have arrested two suspects from the area but the identity of them has not been disclosed yet.
