SLAMABAD: Students of Japanese language brought a mixed bag of linguistic and cultural performances in Japanese Language Speech Contest held at National University of Modern Languages (NUML), Islamabad, on Wednesday.
A play in Japanese language, developed on theme of dying joint family system and emergence of a generation detached from the social and cultural norms, was performed by the students and they bagged applauses of the audience by successfully conveying the message.
The Japanese songs by students also were another display of students’ talent to communicate in a foreign language with an equal ease. Then students delivered their well-worded, well-sounded and well-articulated speeches. Mr Naveed Tariq got the first position, Mr Umer Farooq got the second position while Mr Naeem Khan bagged the third position in the Japanese speech contest.
The event was arranged by the Department of Japanese Language and it was attended by the Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Oe, Japanese Cultural Counselor Toshikazu Isomura, Director General (DG) Brig Azam Jamal, Head of Japanese Department Dr Anwer Mahmood, Directors, Deans, Heads, Faculty members and students of the University.
Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Oe, while addressing students at the occasion, said that “the quality that really surprises me is the ability of the Pakistani people to learn, speak and communicate in many languages”. He told the students that he decided to speak in English at the occasion, but after observing the proficiency and accurate grammar of participants in speeches, play and songs, it made me feel at home to interact with you in Japanese language. This is first time outside Japan that I am delivering speech in Japanese language because here are good number of students, faculty members and others who can easily understand me, he added.
Mr Hiroshi said he would like to highlight here that NUML was playing an exemplary role to promote the languages and cultures of the world as well as understating among the nations. This tool of language would further enhance cultural, economic and political collaboration and partnership between Pakistan and Japan, he added.
DG Brig Azam Jamal told that “NUML takes pride to be the only university in Pakistan that teaches around 25 national and international languages and organizes their speech contests”. “In these speech contests the contestants do not merely deliver speeches but they also present cultural performances belong to respective languages and countries and this helps our students a lot to know more about respective languages”, he added.
In the end DG Brig Azam Jamal and Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Oe distributed the prizes and certificates among the winners and participants of the event. Moreover, DG presented university shield to the Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Oe.
