ISLAMABAD: In a highly regrettable incident, the FIA prosecutor in Benazir Bhutto murder case was shot dead, here on Friday (today).
Chaudhry Zulfiqar was driving his car along-with his guard when unknown people opened indiscriminate firing. The counsel received more than 12 bullets on his chest, shoulders and neck and died on way to the hospital. His guard, though hurt, survived in the incident.
Sources said the counsel, who had also rendered services in Mumbai attack and Hajj corruption cases, had left for Anti Terrorism Court when the incident occurred.
A passer by woman was also killed in the incident, while the guard, Farman, received one bullet and is now out of danger, said Pims Hospital sources.
Reacting to the incident, lawyers boycotted proceedings in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, while hearing in the case was postponed until 14 May.
Caretaker interior minister, Malik Habib Khan has sought report of the incident from IG Islamabad.
On the other hand, arrangements to conduct postmortem were being made while a board headed by medico-legal officer Dr. Farrukh was constituted to determine effects of the attack on the body.
Investigation team constituted
An investigation team has been constituted to probe into the killing, while caretaker interior minister Malik Habib has ordered an inquiry.
Meanwhile, a news channel reported that the FIA high up had told the government about the threats he was receiving and which ultimately ended his life.
It also said late Zulfikhar Chaudhry had collected irrefutable evidence against Rifaqat and Hasnain, wanted in Benazir Bhutto murder case.
