KABUL: Great invaluable remains of a Buddhist city are at risk in Afghanistan but the responsibility if this possible destruction lies with a Buddhist country.
According to the reports of American media, A Chinese corporation has won the rights to do mining at a copper field near Mes Aynak, situated in volatile Logar Province.
This place is said to be world’s largest untapped copper deposits — worth more than $100 billion but the site also houses the astonishing-remains of an ancient Buddhist city.
To the surprise of archaeologists so far many golden Buddhist statues, dozens of buildings and fragile Buddhist manuscripts have been discovered but still 90 percent of the site remains underground and undiscovered.
A complete discovery could take decades but Chinese company has decided to destroy the site as mining requires the destruction of this site.
According to the sources, the destruction of the Buddhist sites will begin later this year and the Afghan government has no objections whatsoever.
The sources told that if this tragedy happens, it can be a bigger tragedy than the notorious destruction of the Buddhas at Bamiyan in 2001.
