Washington: Commenting over Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline, United States has said once again that it is in Pakistan’s best interest to avoid any santionable activity.
State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell during media briefing here on Wednesday said that US recognised that Pakistan had significant energy requirements, adding that they really think there were other long-term solutions to Pakistan’s energy needs.
He said that the US had been assisting Pakistan government to overcome the energy crisis in the South Asian country. “And so we made it clear to our interlocutors, for instance, that we – it’s in their best interest to avoid any sanctionable activity. And we think that we provide and are providing the Pakistani government and people a better way to meet their energy needs in some of the assistance we’re providing.”
Pakistan’s President Zardari is in Iran on two day visit to discuss the project with Iranian counterpart.
Pakistan consistently says the project is necessary to overcome their energy crisis which has damaged their industries badly during last few years.
To a query, Ventrell said, “We contribute to the alleviation of the energy crisis in Pakistan by supporting large-scale energy projects, including one that’ll add 900 megawatts to the power grid by 2013. That’s going to help supply electricity to an estimated 2 million Pakistanis.
