Kolkata: Following a miserable back to back Test defeats against England, team India mainly the skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has faced ire from the former Indian cricketers who need some major changes in the Test team.
Former Indian test captain Sourav Ganguly joining the recommendation club has said India should follow the example of most countries and try split captaincy tactic in order to ease the workload on MS Dhoni who leads the team in all three formats as well as keeping wicket.
“Every team in the world has gone with split captaincy. I am not saying the selectors should sack Dhoni and say, ‘You’re out’. I have always said there is too much burden on him. I think we are losing MS Dhoni as a player,” leading cricket website reports quoting Sourav Ganguly as saying on Indian news channel.
He said that Captaincy and your ability as a player are interlinked, saying Dhoni is a much better one-day captain than he is a Test captain.
“His performance in recent Tests has not been up to the mark, but that is because there is too much of a burden on him. I am a firm believer that his job has to be split – he needs a reprieve.”
On the other hand, MS Dhoni leaving his future as captain in the selectors’ hands added he won’t run away from the responsibility. “As a leader this is a challenge thrown at me.”
“The easiest thing to do for me right now is to quit the captaincy and stay part of the side. That’s running away from responsibility that’s upon us. Of course there are others who will decide. There is BCCI and other administrative people who look into that. For me, my responsibility is to get the team together and be prepared for the next Test match.”
Dhoni said that it is always good to lead a side when you are performing well. That is not the time you need a leader. Leading a side is all about when the team is not doing well.
