Kolkata: Heroes at home, India, tuned zeros as they faced yet another humiliating defeat against visiting England on Sunday, losing the third test by seven wickets played here at Eden Gardensfrom 5-9 December.
During the past decade, India were considered as heroes at home, trounced overseas but the on-going series against England have turned the tables over and this is the first time since 1999-2000 India have lost two consecutive Tests at home.
On the last day of the five-day test match, India were struggling at 239 for 9 and it added only eight more runs coming on to the bat on fifth morning. Ravichandran Ashwin with his unbeaten 91 stretched the match to the last day, setting a target of 41.
England needed just 41 to get over the line yet they lost three of eight against the spin of Ashwin and Ojha to taste the thoroughly-deserved victory.
India scored 316 in its first innings with Tendulkar scoring 76 and Gambhir scoring 60. Left arm English spinner Monty Panesar showed 4 Indian batsmen their way to pavilion, while pacer Anderson clinched 3.
In reply, skipper Alistair Cook’s mighty ton reached England to an enormous total of 523 aided with half centuries by Compton, Trott and Kevin Pietersen. Ojha took 4 in the first innings.
India began their second innings with a responsible partnership between opener Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag but they could not resist long.
India lost six wickets between lunch and tea on the fourth day, beginning with a classy, and it was left to the tail-enders to avoid an innings defeat.
Alistair Cook was declared man of the match for his blustering 190.
