Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday ordered formation of a commission to investigate the incident of Lal Masjid that reportedly resulted in the death of 154 people including girl students of the mosque’s seminary.
Responding to the complaints of heirs of missing persons during the operation, the apex court gave Justice Shehzad Sheikh the task to probe the incident. He was also provided with the record of the tragic incident.
The commission was set up with eight fundamental points, which will also probe disappearance of people during the operation.
The siege of Lal Masjid and Madressah Jamia Hafsa located in the federal capital began when scores of reported militants began stand-off with the then government; General Pervez Musharraf and Shaukat Aziz administration.
The militants reportedly engaged in fight, abduction, display of modern weapons and unrest in the federal capital, provoking the authorities to launch action against them. Operation Sunrise was conducted by brute force wherein alleged phosphorus bombs were used to clear the facility of the militants.
