Islamabad: Pakistan and Afghanistan on Wednesday agreed to release some Taliban prisoners in Pakistan in order to begin reconciliation efforts with the Taliban leadership.
According to a joint statement issued by Pakistan Foreign Office, Pakistan would release Afghan prisoners on the request of Afghanistan and Afghan Peace Council delegation, led by Salahuddin Rabbani, which would help in beginning the reconciliation process.
“Afghanistan and United States will gave a safe passage to the Taliban negotiators,” the handout said adding that both neighbouring countries would also work together to remove the names of negotiators from the list of most wanted terrorists.
The two neighbouring countries would also convene an Ulema conference which would consider on the issues of suicide attacks and militancy.
“The conference will also urge Taliban to break ties with al-Qaeda and other global terror organizations.”
The two countries also agreed to culminate terror activities within their territories and take steps which would help in restricting militant activities on the border.
