Islamabad: Number of children not going to schools in Pakistan has exceeded 5 million mark in the past few years, a report says.
According to the report released by United Nation (UN) and Pakistan government, the current literacy rate of the country is 56 percent and as per the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) it should be 88 percent by 2015.
After a recent constitutional amendment in Pakistan, it is now the government’s responsibility to provide free and quality education to all children below the age of 16 years.
Following the amendment the country has initiated a project named “Waseela-e-Taleem” to increase the literacy rate. The authorities say that 3 million children would be educated through ‘Benazir Income Support Program’ in four years.
Experts say that literacy rate can only be increased when there will be an increase in the education budget. They also said that it was the government’s duty to make sure transparent use of the budget.
Education expert Dr A H Nayyer said that the social departments’ budget could also be increased by decreasing expenses on the government officials.
