Bamako: The Mali Islamist group has executed one of its own member accused of killing a fisherman in the Malian city of Timbuktu.
According to reports, two days before he was executed, Mohammed got into a fight with a fisherman around 50 kilometres outside of Timbuktu. The latter accused Mohammed of having trampled his nets.
The fisherman then attacked Mohammed, who shot at him with his Kalashnikov, killing him on the spot.
Spokesman for Ansar Dine, a militant group operating in Mali said that Moussa Agh Mohammed appeared before the Islamic police two days ago and admitted that he had killed a fisherman.
“Mohammed was executed by firing squad as he kneeled on the ground facing east toward Mecca. Around a hundred people crowded around to watch.”
The victim’s family came to Mohammed’s execution, and before he was put to death, they were asked if they would forgive him for his crime. It was explained that in exchange, Mohammed’s family would be forced to compensate them for the death of their son.
The victim’s mother said that she could not forgive Mohammed, and Ansar Dine was forced to execute one of their own.
It is to be mentioned here that after a military coup in 2012, the Islamists along with secular Taureg rebels seized swathes of land. The Islamists later forced Taureg rebels to move out and implemented sharia law in the seized region.
Three Islamists group Ansar Dine, Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghrib (AQIM) and Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) are operating in the region. The three groups are thought to be allied with global terror network.
