Karachi: Pakistan’s legendary comedian Safirullah Siddiqui ‘Lehri’ has been laid to rest in a local graveyard here on Thursday.
He passed away after a prolonged illness. Lehri’s funeral procession was held at Bait-ul-Mukarram mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. A large number of people from all the walks of life attended the funeral. He was 83. Lehri was laid to rest at a graveyard in Yasinabad neighborhood.
Lehri who popularly known as Lollywood’s golden-age comedian Lehri, was fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Karachi’s private hospital for last few months.
His family sources said that the actor would be laid to rest in Yasim Abad graveyard.
Lehri started his career in 1950s and worked until the 1980s. Lehri won the Nigar Award for around a dozen films. The late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto provided him with a monthly stipend of Rs. 2,500 during her first tenure, which he continues to receive, though there has been no increase in the amount.
Lehri’s first film “Anokhi” was released in 1956, and his last production was Dhanak in 1986. The vast majority of his films have been in Urdu, though he did perform in a few Punjabi productions.
