London: Badminton World Federation is set to take action against eight players who reportedly looked trying to lose their matches after two such games at the Olympics ended in controversy.
The federation in an official statement stated that the players face charges of “not using one`s best efforts to win a match” and “conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport.”
World doubles champions Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang of China and their South Korean opponents Jung Kyun-eun and Kim Ha-na drew the ire of the spectators on Tuesday for committing simple errors and after their serves ended into the net.
However, it is not known as to what possible sanctions the players representing China, South Korea and Indonesia could face.
They are due to compete in quarterfinals Wednesday afternoon.
The Chinese women lost 21-14, 21-11 and both pairs were jeered off the court and the result meant that the top-seeded Wang and Yu will avoid playing their No. 2-seeded Chinese teammates until the final.
In the next women`s doubles between South Korea`s Ha Jung-eun and Kim Min-jung and Indonesia`s Meiliana Jauhari and Greysia Polii, the contest was claimed by the Korean pair and both the teams were warned for deliberately losing points.
Referee Torsten Berg said, “We have looked seriously into the case and as referee I have taken a decision and made a report to the BWF which will be known in due course.”
