London: China’s 16-year old teen sensation Ye Shiwen, who won her second gold medal at the London 2012 on Tuesday, has said that doping allegations against her were unfair and branded the Western media as biased.
During a jam-packed press conference, Shiwen was questioned directly if she had ever used performance-enhancing drugs, she replied: “Absolutely not.”
When asked whether she was being treated unfairly? Shiwen replied: “Of course, I think it is a little unfair on me, but I was not affected by it.”
Shiwen was also asked whether like the head of the Chinese anti-doping programme, did she also think those in the western media who question her performances are biased?
The double-gold medallist replied: “I also feel they are biased. In other countries, other swimmers have won multiple gold medals. How come people from other countries are not being criticized for winning multiple medals?”
Shiwen’s performances have come under inspection following the revelation that the time of her final 50m freestyle split in winning the 400m medley in world record time on Saturday was even faster than that recorded by Ryan Lochte in winning the men’s race earlier that evening.
Shiwen said her improvement was down to good coaching, and added that she had been training for five hours a day for the past nine years.
“A teacher in my kindergarten noticed I had a good physique for swimming so they picked me. I want to thank my coaches and team-mates, they have been helping me a lot. They have made me strong, which is why I have not been affected by the outside noise,” Shiwen said.
