I was visiting my home district of Badin for Eid al Adha and used this opportunity to visit flood affected areas of my district. Just to tell readers, Badin is a big district of Sindh blessed with natural resources like Oil and Gas reserves while also housing a number of sugar mills. It has high quality rice, spices and sunflower being produced. In my visit I saw that water levels have reached zero level which was not the case when the calamity hit around Eid Al Fitr. All submerged areas have been back to near normal.
It is important to note that there are not many flood relief camps except some operated by banned terrorist outfits like Jamaat ud Dawa. Hence these were not ideal conditions to take pictures as there were no camps and victims have shifted back to their villages. Despite that I traced them and I have taken pictures of some villages, which are still under waters but they were forced to live there at the mercy of infectious diseases and danger of snake bites. It is quite evident that evacuees have been shifted to their respective homes and villages without proper planning. Local administration did hurry to send
victims back to their homes and villages. It is also sad to note that local administration has failed to restore education and health of flood victims.
I also visited LBOD(Left Bank Outfall Drain), now there is no surge in waters as two months have elapsed since flood. I met so many people from all walks of life, they were of the view it was just media hype that 85% people of district were displaced due to flood, while the actual figure was merely 25%. NGOs, media and certain other groups for their personal interests like funds generation showed huge devastations in district of Badin due to floods, people believed. Yes, it is fact that almost 90% agriculture land of Badin district has been destroyed by floods. Majority of people of Badin district depends on agriculture. To comfort victims, local administration is giving compensation of Rs. 10,000 per acre to effected people who are basically farmers or smaller cultivators, whose land property is below than 25 acres and also Rs. 30,000 to affected families in the form of ‘Pakistan Card’.
As no city was hit by disaster, poor villagers were seemed to be happy getting Rs.10,000 cash support. Poor villagers were talking about only food, money and shelter, their demands were met through this support. Still in 21st century they have no sense of education and health facilities for their villages and how crucial these things are.
Village Fatehabad was among those villages which were completely sunk. The only charity clinic for first aid located in Fatehabad was under waters too. I took pictures of charity clinic. No respite from local administration for this charity clinic to restore it back to working and beneficial centre for poor.
As a whole I observed lackadaisical approach of the administration in restoring education and health facilities. I would like to recommend ruling party(PPP) leadership to take notice of the situation and provide measures for permanent or long term solutions. I also noticed how the mullahs and terrorists of Pakistan are giving people false notions. The never admit this fact that flood in Badin is not a natural disaster. It is man-made. Faulty design of LBOD is culprit.
Since formation of LBOD, every year people of Badin have been facing catastrophe. Mullahs in their Friday sermons, say that “flood is due to sins of people and it is wrath of God.” They are creating panic in society, people who are already mentally disturbed due to loss in floods, have been attacked by mullahs’ venomous speeches against humanity. And banned terrorist outfits work with impunity in Badin are doing business of brain washing of people. There are definite reports that they are engaged in brain washing people.
Regarding LBOD, Social workers, engineers and all concerned well-educated people have sent their recommendations to President of Pakistan, sindh government to amend its faulty designs for the larger interest of people of this region. Through your Platform, being a Pakistani I would also like to appeal our President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari to order redesigning of the faulty design of LBOD and take necessary action according to experts suggestion for the best
interest of Badin.
And last but not the least, as winter is on and there is, indeed, extreme cold weather in the country. The flood victims in Badin have to spend the cold nights in worn-out tents. And this is dilemma for homeless flood victims residing in flood relief camps. would any elected representative of Badin district bother to move forward to help them.
