Hyderabad Deccan: World champions India thrashed England by 126 runs in the first one day match of their five-game series, thanks to a superb innings by skipper Dhoni and some disciplined bowling. Set a target of 301 by India, England never looked like a winning team. They lost Keiswetter (7) very early. Kevin Pietersen was run out after scoring only 19. Trott and Cook then gave some stability to the innings and took the score past 100. Then a collapse began at 111 when Trott was bowled by Ravindra Jadeja.
Spinners Ashwin and Jadeja captured three wickets each. Yadav took two wickets.
Earlier, India had struggled in the first 30 overs, scoring just four runs per over and losing four wickets. Gambhir and Kohli scored 32 and 37, respectively.
But Raina and Dhoni not only steadied the ship, but also accelerated the run rate. Raina scored 61 off 55 balls, hitting two sixes and five fours. Skipper Dhoni remained not out on 87, which he scored off just 70 balls with the help of one six and ten fours. Ravindra Jadedja played a brisk 27 runs knock.
All English bowlers except Swann struggled. The off spinner grabbed one wicket, giving away only 35 runs in 10 overs. All other bowlers were hit for over 5 runs per over.
Dhoni was declared man of the match.
