Srinagr: A mediating team set up by the Indian interior ministry to come up with suggestions regarding the Kashmir issue has rejected its independence as an option, Indian media reported on Wednesday.
According to reports, the group has suggested that the people of the restive valley could be persuaded to accept wide autonomy to help reduce violation of human rights. Besides, the masses should be provided with their basic rights, the group said.
The report urged the government to reduce the number of ground troops in the disputed region, on which Indian and Pakistan have fought several wars since their independence.
Talking to a private Pakistani television, Kashmiri leader Yasin Malik rejected the report and said that it was produced by a group which had no importance and which was fulfilling the Indian agenda.
He said that the people of Kashmir would continue their struggle unless their demands were met. “Kashmiris want lasting solution of the issue according to their wishes”, He added.
