Washington: The United States Senate unanimously confirmed Lean E- Panetta as Secretary of Defence on Tuesday.
Panetta spent two years as director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and will now replace Robert M. Gates who is retiring after serving in two consecutive administrations.
According to statement Panetta thanked the Senate “for the strong vote of confidence” and said he was “deeply honoured” by the 100-0 tally and the president’s nomination.
While heaping praise on Panetta before the vote, some senators questioned the administration’s Afghanistan policy, underscoring the challenge facing the new Defense chief. More than two dozen senators sent Obama a letter urging a significant drawdown of troops.
