Lahore: An independent specialized Pediatric Center has been established at Services Hospital for the treatment of HIV positive children under national AIDS Control Programme. It is the first treatment center forthe children in the country.
Secretary Health Punjab Fawad Hassan Fawad was informed during a briefing regarding National AIDS Control Programme, Punjab.
Programme’s Provincial Coordinator Dr. Salman Shahid briefed that this is the first treatment center in Pakistan for the treatment of AIDS affected children. He further said that qualified staff and latest diagnostic equipment have been installed in this center.
The Secretary was informed that Punjab has become the first province in Pakistan to implement the prevention of parent to child transmission and three districts have been declared as model districts which include Gujrat, DG. Khan and Faisalabad. Moreover, Case Managers have also been appointed at Gujrat and DG. Khan for the counseling treatment of out reach patients.
He further informed that a new treatment center shall be functional at DHQ Hospital Gujrat before the end of April 2011. The meeting was informed that there were 371 new AIDS patients had been registered, whereas, 1125 Viral Load Test and 2488 Rapid Test had been performed while screening of 1530 suspected patients had also been carried out in one year.
Dr. Salman informed that treatments as well as counseling  facilities are being provided to all registered HIV patients and concrete steps has been taken for the welfare of these patients under National AIDS Control Programme.
