ISTANBUL: A landmark project to link Asia and Europe through an undersea tunnel from Turkey has entered the final phase after the ground and sea tunnels were combined on Tuesday.
The project will complete by Oct 2013. The project has been named Marmara. The purpose of the project is to get the support of European public in connection with the possible European Union membership issue.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyeb Erdogan attended the ceremony held on this occasion after traveling in a trolley.
Erdogan examined the progress on the $1.75 billion project, which is being executed in cooperation with South Korea.
Erdogan said that the project would be opened by Oct 29, 2013. He termed the future of Turkey glorious and said that the talented youth of the country would continue the successful journey.
Later, Erdogan examined the progress on the other end of the tunnel by walking 1387 meter in tube where its Scordar station is located.
