New Delhi: Maoists insurgents have been trying to establish their base in Assam and the anti-talk faction of ULFA led by Commander-in-Chief Paresh Barua had launched a “massive recruitment drive, particularly in Upper Assam districts, to strengthen its base, an Indian daily quoted a senior Central Reserve Police Force officer (CRPF).
There were specific intelligence reports indicating that youths from Assam were “veering towards the Naxal philosophy which is a matter of serious concern”, CRPF IGP (Operations) M P Nathaniel said.
“With most insurgent outfits coming forward for talks, the Maoists are trying to establish its roots in the state and we are keeping a close watch on both these forces and ULFA cadre in the state”, he said.
Adequate measures were being taken to stop the youths from being indoctrinated and the whereabouts of youths who were reported missing when they went outside the state for getting jobs were also being ascertained, he added.
“As the peace process is on, the ULFA anti-talk faction is keeping a low profile but their recruitment drive, particularly in Upper Assam districts, is on full swing, Nathaniel, who is in charge of Upper Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh”, said.
