Rome: Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi will face trial for buying underage sex and abuse of power, a judge Cristina Di Censa ruled, Italian media reported on Tuesday. The judge fixed the date for the first hearing in a fast-track trial for April 6. “We didn’t expect anything else,” Berlusconi’s lawyers said on hearing the news.
Berlusconi denies wrongdoing. After the decision on Tuesday, he did not appear at a scheduled news conference in Sicily, where Italy is seeking to stem a flow of more than 5,000 illegal immigrants from Tunisia.
Earlier on Monday the prime minister said that he would not step down, and his center-right coalition, which governs with a narrow majority, has stood by him.
