Islamabad: Target for National Spring Tree Plantation Campaign 2011 has been fixed and unanimously decided that 53.35 million saplings would be planted throughout the country during Spring Tree Plantation Campaign 2011.
This was decided in a meeting of Inter-Provincial Committee held in Islamabad on Monday presided over by the Federal Minister for Environment Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi.
About 20 million saplings would be planted in Punjab, 8.5 million in Sindh, one million in Balochistan, five million in Azad Jammu Kashmir and 8.7 million saplings in FATA would be planted during the campaign.
The minister said that Pakistan is facing extreme environmental problems so, concrete measures are needed to be taken. He further said that different projects and plans should be initiated in the sector.
Afridi urged that there is dire need to increase forests in the country. He was of the view that basically forests are the natural factory for observing carbon and releasing oxygen for the survival of all living things on this earth.
Likewise they are playing vital role for preventing land-erosion, drought and flood situations. He said the environmental issues can not be ignored at all and we are committed to face this big challenge but support from all provinces and other agencies are required in this regard.
He appreciated the proposals and recommendations given by participants of the meeting and assured them that their concerns would be given due consideration.
