Colombo: As many as 800,000 people were affected and over 132000 acres of paddy land destroyed as floods caused by heavy rains hit the country.
Almost 8,000 houses were damaged by the latest wave of the floods and about 70,000 people are now being accommodated in emergency relief camps.
The government said that the military had used helicopters to airdrop dry rations to flood-affected people in Batticaloa, one of the worst hit districts.
The Government has appealed to the general public to assist over 800,000 flood victims as they are in need of drinking water, mats, bed sheets, other clothing and milk food for children.
The World Food Programme (WFP) pledged that it will provide emergency food assistance to flood affected people in Sri Lanka.
